Dear Trustees of the Catholic Health
Association,
We the undersigned write to urge you to
join us in endorsing and supporting the Protect Life Act,
introduced by Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA), and co-sponsored by
Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and a growing bipartisan
coalition of legislators in the United States Congress.
We acknowledge the intense debate over the
recently passed healthcare bill, including your public
statements in support of the bill, despite opposition by the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Your organization
admitted that the bill ‘wasn’t perfect,’ and debates over
whether taxpayer funds will be used to cover abortion continue
today.
The Protect Life Act represents a genuine
bipartisan effort to ensure that no taxpayer funds will be used
for abortion, or abortion related services, and would add needed
conscience protection for healthcare workers. The rest of the
healthcare law remains untouched.
His Eminence Cardinal Daniel DiNardo
recently said “Efforts to ensure that our health care system
serves the life, health and conscience of all will be a
legislative goal of the Catholic bishops in the months to come,”
adding that the Pitts-Lipinski bill is “a significant
contribution to this important task.”
As you know, Catholics still have strong
opinions on the recently signed healthcare law. In fact, a Zogby
poll reported that only 33% of Catholics support the new
healthcare law, while 66% of Catholics oppose it.
But Catholics were even more united behind
this foundational principle: No federal funding for abortion.
I join with Catholics and all people of
good will across the country in asking you to use your influence
to ensure that the Protect Life Act becomes federal law.
Sincerely,
Your Name Here
